Tell the Feds to Keep Public Lands Rule in Place

Act Now to Protect Public Lands

Despite the federal government shutdown, the Trump administration’s Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is attempting to repeal the landmark Public Lands Rule. Adopted in April 2024, the long overdue rule elevated conservation in public lands management to the level of extractive practices, improving the balance of the agency’s multiple-use mission. Without this rule, 245 million acres of America’s public lands will be at risk of increased logging, mining, and oil and gas extraction. That’s an area of the U.S. larger than Portugal!

Repealing this rule prioritizes corporate interests over clean drinking water, local communities, and imperiled wildlife. It also undermines our ability to prepare for and adapt to intensifying drought, wildfire, and the worsening impacts of climate change. Further, it deprives the American people of opportunities to experience these magnificent places and keep them protected for future generations.

Dear Bureau of Land Management:

I urge you to retain the Public Lands Rule and strongly oppose the proposed rule rescission. Finalized last year, the rule marked a critical shift in BLM’s management practices by elevating the sustainable management of public lands.

For more than 40 years, the BLM has prioritized resource extraction over other uses on public lands that are home to thousands of species, including those on an extinction trajectory like the northern spotted owl, marbled murrelet, and Oregon Coast coho salmon.

By providing modern management tools, the Public Lands Rule aimed to bring balance to BLM’s approach and elevate conservation as a shared value. Meaningful implementation of the rule can help sustain the iconic open landscapes of the West that offer refuge for wildlife, provide public access to nature, and safeguard innumerable stories of human experiences on the land. Rescinding the rule would be a massive step backward, returning land management to a lopsided, extraction first approach that overlooks the vital importance of sustaining healthy ecosystems. Moreover, by rescinding the rule, the BLM is ignoring the reality that development-focused practices have degraded our public lands, a situation compounded by factors such as climate change, wildfire, and drought.

Ninety-two percent of the comments submitted on the draft Public Lands Rule favored its adoption, reflecting overwhelming public endorsement. Reversing this rule now would undermine years of public engagement and widespread support for balanced, modernized land management.

I implore you not to repeal the Public Lands Rule, which is essential to sustaining healthy ecosystems on federally managed public lands for wildlife and future generations.

Sincerely,
