Stop wasteful anti-wolf bill in its tracks!

The Oregon state legislative session is underway and unfortunately, anti-wolf legislators with financial ties to the livestock industry have brought back legislation that would further compromise wolf recovery. Oregon already pays full market value for livestock confirmed killed by wolves, a program the conservation community has long supported. But controversial SB 777 seeks to apply an up to 7x multiplier to those payments, meaning public funds would be spent to pay 7 times the fair market value of livestock predated by wolves.

Such a multiplier would disincentivize using the proven-effective non-lethal coexistence tools available for free to the livestock industry and rapidly drain the fund meant to improve tolerance for wolves. Worse yet, compensation does not mean the wolf’s life is spared. Public funds are spent on compensation AND the wolves are often killed as well. Oregon’s wolf population is still imperiled, with a stagnant minimum population of 178 wolves and an ongoing poaching crisis. Join us in asking your Senator and Senate leadership to stop SB 777 in its tracks.
